Description: Preventive/Disaster Psychiatry

This two year program is designed to provide military psychiatrists with expertise on preparing for and responding to mass casualty events, designing population-oriented behavioral health prevention and intervention programs, and performing behavioral health epidemiology. Graduates will use their strong quantitative and analytical skills in biostatistics and epidemiology to identify and measure organizational health needs, population surveillance, and to investigate the impact of biological, environmental and behavioral factors on organizational health.
 
The first year of the fellowship is spent in the MPH program at USUHS. During this year, fellows will select an area related to behavioral health for special emphasis through elective course work and a research project. The second year of the fellowship will be devoted to applying the material gained during the first year across a variety of consultative, research and clinical experiences.
 
Fellows will become active participants in the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) research team. As members of this team, they will be included in all aspects of research in the area of biopsychosocial responses to trauma and disaster. Typically, they will be paired with a senior investigator and begin analysis on an existing database. They will become expert in the use of various methodologies for the study of individuals and groups following trauma and disaster/combat events. Fellows will be given faculty appointments and participate in teaching activities.
